Quick energy tip no.14: Evaluate your home with a Blower Door test
The heat in your home can often escape out through the cracks and gaps in your windows and chimneys. A Blower Door test can show you exactly where it’s all escaping from.
Do you want to improve the energy efficiency of you house? If so you may want to get a Blower Door test carried out by the lads over at Electric Ireland. A Blower Door test is the perfect way to see where exactly your house is leaking precious hot air.
So what exactly is a Blower Door test? Well, it’s also known as an Air Pressurisation Test and that should give you a clue as to what’s involved. The guys at Electric Ireland will create a small pressure difference between the inside and the outside of your home. Basically, air is blown into your home with a big fan (see below) and forced through any gaps or cracks in the building.

They can then measure how much air is leaking by assessing all the windows, chimneys and vents in your home. Once you know where the worst gaps are you can fix them accordingly with insulation or simply by draught-proofing the affected area.
You could end up needing to insulate your roof or maybe you’ll need cavity wall insulation. Either way, once you get the work done you’ll be making savings for the future.
