Anyone who predicted that Cork would beat Donegal by 49 points this weekend would have been hailed as a mad person... but they would have been right.

Before the two teams meet at headquarters tomorrow afternoon, their ladies’ sides went head to head in Hyde Park and it didn’t exactly go to plan for the Tír Chonaill women.

Whether or not they tried to implement a defence system of the like that Jim McGuinness has masterminded with the fellas is unclear, but if they did it didn’t work as the Rebelettes scored a whopping 8-27 and conceded only two points on their way to a 49-point success in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

Certainly, the scoreboard doesn’t make for comfortable viewing if you’re from the north-west.

In fairness to Donegal, they were coming up against a side that have won six of the last seven All-Ireland titles and were also reportedly missing a number of starting players who were attending a wedding today.

We can say with some degree of safety that such a scoreline won’t be repeated at Croke Park tomorrow – the final tally of both sides will be far closer to 0-2 than 8-27 – but if Conor Counihan and his players were looking for some inspiration ahead of the semi-final, then the female representatives of their native county certainly provided it.
