Pic of the day: Bloody Bike

Irish athlete Aileen Morrison didn’t have a great day today finishing 43rd in the Olympic Triathlon.

The athlete from Derry suffered a very nasty fall on the bike section of the Olympic triathlon in Hyde Park today. Nicola Spirig won the gold as Morrison finished nine minutes behind her.

Morrison was desperately unlucky, taking the worst fall of any of the athletes at a particularly tricky corner on the course.

Afterwards in an interview on RTÉ the athlete showed off a particularly sore and bloody-looking elbow in an emotional interview.

Talking about the injury she said, “I sort of slid and the wheel came out from under me. I was sore, but I was able to stand up in swing my leg over. As long as I could go I would keep going.”

The picture above shows the blood-stained handlebars of Morrison’s bikes and really highlights the literal blood and tears that goes into each athlete’s performance at the games.

As Morrison crossed the line she waved to the large Irish support that turned out for and though she vowed to back and we have no doubt she will.
