Pic of the Day: Sticking it to the referee, GAA style

18/08/2012 11:50 am

There aren’t many GAA players out there who haven’t dreamt of meting out this sort of punishment on a match official at some point. Living the dream, this lad.

Some of our readers might be able to enlighten us on the identities of the player and the referee in the picture and where it took place, but forgive us for suggesting that it is a scene that could quite feasibly take place in any GAA match on any given weekend.

Don’t get us wrong, GAA referees have it tough and often have to put up with levels of abuse that would put a crowd at a Premier League football match to shame, but sometimes, particularly at club level, they are guilty of wildly infuriating decisions that cause GAA players like our friend here to act out of character and succumb to the red mist for a few seconds.

Judging by the posture of the player in question, it looks as if he was actually playing a kick-pass and the ref just happened to be in close proximity, but the priceless expression on the ref’s face looks as if he was either just about to get a kick up the hole or was just on the receiving end of one.

Fair play to the photographer in question, perfect timing or what?
