Thursday's TV: The Science Squad and European Tour golf

05/07/2012 7:00 am

Tonight the telly box spits out a Vin Diesel sci-fi blockbuster and the latest from the lovely Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain and her Science Squad.

Main Event: The Science Squad, RTÉ One, 8:30pm

Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain, Kathriona Devereux and Jonathan McCrea present a round-up of the events scheduled for July during the Euroscience Open Forum in Dublin tonight.

Researchers also explain how they are using social networking techniques for novel global media applications, and a group of environmental scientists investigate how modern behaviour can be bad for people's health. Much as we like The Science Squad, their lack of lycra costumes (Aoibhinn especially) and capes are starting to annoy us at this stage.

Sport Pick: Live European Tour Golf, Sky Sports 1, 9:30am

Coverage of the opening day of the tournament at Le Golf National in Paris, where the 2018 Ryder Cup is set to be held. Home favourite Thomas Levet won the title 12 months ago when he finished on seven-under-par, one stroke ahead of Mark Foster and Thorbjorn Olesen. Is 9:30am too early to get up and watch golf though? We'll see...

Movie Pick: Babylon AD, Film4, 9pm

There aren't many options on terrestrial TV tonight, so we recommend you try out UPC's new On Demand service if you want to continue watching top class entertainment, as the service includes the RTE Player, 3Player and a host of boxsets and other shows, free to all UPC customers.

Babylon AD stars Vin Diesel as a mercenary in a post-apocalyptic future accepts a job escorting a mysterious girl and the nun protecting her from Russia to New York. Trust us, it's better than it sounds.

Along the way, she exhibits strange powers that could hold the key to mankind's salvation - but various factions are plotting to put her gifts to their own use. Sci-fi adventure, starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry, Gerard Depardieu and Charlotte Rampling
