Tonight’s TV: New Comedy Awards, Giro D’Italia and Green Street

Let’s hope it’s lovely outside because it’s pretty slim pickings on the box tonight, but there’s just enough to satisfy you if you can’t lift your ass off the couch.

Main Event: The RTE Two New Comedy Awards, RTE 2, 10.45pm

Ireland might be criticised for a number of things but one thing we tend to do well is comedy and this series, presented by Republic of Telly duo Bernard O’Shea and Jennifer Maguire and featuring live performances from the Sugar Club in Dublin, is aimed at identifying who just might become the next Dylan Moran, David O’Doherty or Tommy Tiernan.

Sporting Pick: Giro D’Italia, Sky Sports 2, 7.45pm

Cycling has had a pretty bad reputation in recent years, but with signs that the cheats are being spotted and weeded out, it is gradually attracting interest once again. This year’s Giro has been an incredibly wet one so far but while that makes it difficult for competitors, it also makes it possibly even more interesting from a spectator’s point of view.

Movie Pick: Green Street, ITV4, 10pm

Elijah Wood wouldn’t be the first actor you’d pick to play a West Ham supporting football hooligan and if he was looking for a role as far removed as possible from Frodo Baggins, he certainly found it here.

Wood plays a Harvard student who gets kicked out, moves to London and falls in with a gang of footy hooligans known as the Green Street Elite, but how will they react when they find out he’s a ‘bloody journo’?

Decent Tuesday evening fare if you’ve nothing else to watch.
