Jeremy Clarkson seems to have the amazing gift of always saying the wrong (and horribly offensive) things over and over again. His latest gaffe? He compared the shape of a new car to someone suffering from a facial disfigurement. Really.
The Irish Independent reports that in an episode of Top Gear that was broadcast last Sunday, Mr Clarkson compared a Japanese car that had a large bulge on the back of it, to a “really ugly” growth.
He said that people “wouldn’t talk” to the car if it were at a party and then made things worse by doing an impression of the Elephant Man – a Victorian character who was known for his disfigurement. Oh Jeremy, will you ever learn?
James Partridge, who is the chief executive of Changing Faces – a charity for people with facial disfigurements, said that Mr Clarkson’s remarks “create a culture of ridicule and bullying” for people who are disabled or who have unusual features.
“Mocking people with a disfigurement, a facial growth in this case, is irresponsible and extremely offensive. People with disfigurements experience discrimination and bullying which occasionally includes violence,” he said.
Changing Faces has already written a letter to Ofcom, the broadcasting watchdog, and the BBC, complaining about the show and Mr Clarkson’s remarks.
This is the fourth time that Jeremy Clarkson has been accused of offensive behaviour in recent months.
At the end of December, he mocked the Indian culture during a Top Gear Christmas special and last November he said that public sector workers who were going on strike “should be shot” while their families washed. Hmm…maybe you’re being just a bit harsh there Jeremy?
Oh and we can’t forget all those racist remarks he’s made in the past few years: Asian people, Mexican people – no one is safe it would seem.
A BBC spokesman has already said that there were no plans to edit Mr Clarkson’s comments about growths out of the show, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.
Maybe a solution to everyone’s troubles would be to duct tape his mouth for the entire time he’s on screen – at least then he won’t get the chance to offend anyone else.
