How bad was last night's 'Ireland's Rappers' RTE show? Twitter users weren't impressed...
Last night there was a scheduling class between RTE 2's 'Ireland's Rappers' and TV3's 'Ireland's Bogus Beggars' but Irish Twitter users couldn't decide whose participants were more desperate.
Billed as an exploration of the burgeoning Irish hip hop scene, Reality Bites: Ireland's Rappers promised to deliver a glimpse at a "highly creative and dedicated subculture with a cast of incredible and sometimes barely believable characters". Instead however, we expect that it's given the Republic of Telly's writers at least six months of material.
The one-off show was indeed compulsive viewing, but perhaps for the all the wrong reasons, as it received a mocking appraisal from Irish Twitters users, who poked fun at the rapper's efforts, lifestyles and apparent 'beefs' between rival 'crews'.
"#rte kindly fire your researcher and/or producer," wrote one unimpressed Twitter user, @amypaint. "I don't know if it was the worst documentary or mockumentary...#irelandsrappers".
"'Easily the evilest penis of the century' it doesnt rhyme with anything...wtf haha #irelandsrappers," echoed a disbelieving @cillianmic, while another viewer, @mePadraigReidy, felt that the show had been a missed opportunity:
"Consensus on #irelandsrappers seems like it was missed opportunity to seriously talk about hip hop scene. Shame"
If you missed 'highlights' such as the most empty 21st birthday party we've ever seen, a rapper giving a shout-out to his mother that he had bought a pint of milk for in the previous scene and cutting rap battle putdowns such as "Your Ma's a ride!", we're sure clips of last night's broadcast will pop up on YouTube over the coming days. The show is currently available on RTE Player here.
On the plus side for the growing Irish hip hop scene, at least former Big Brother contestant DJ Spiral didn't show up to really spoil things.
