Actor Richard Griffiths passed away last night and while many will remember him from Harry Potter or Withnail and I, others will recall his appearance in the hilarious Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear.

A highly talented and highly respected actor, Griffiths passed away in the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire last night due to complications following heart surgery. He was 65 years old.

Griffiths had been a regular on stage and on the big screen and small screen since the mid-70s, starring in films such as Superman II, Withnail and I, the Harry Potter series and The History Boys and on television programmes like The Sweeney, Bird of Prey and detective drama Pie in the Sky. He also received numerous awards for his appearance in the stage version of The History Boys.

Griffiths’ untimely passing has been lamented by a number of his co-stars today, including Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and Withnail and I’s Richard E Grant and for a reminder of what he brought to the big screen, have one more look at him playing Uncle Monty in Withnail and I below and as Doctor Albert S Meinheimer in Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear in the video at the top of the page.
