Crystal Dingus. Hucklebuck star registers lowest ever score on Celebrity Mastermind
He can sure rock a hucklebuck but it doesn’t seem as if Crystal Swing singer Derek Burke has much between the ears after he registered the lowest ever score on Celebrity Mastermind.
It is a testament to the dearth of celebrities in this country when the producers had to call upon the Cork native to appear in the first place, but he’s probably wishing he didn’t turn up at all after a less than flattering public appearance.
The 21-year old with the wobbly knees was making an appearance on the TV3 version of the BBC show to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis, but after choosing the rather left-field topic of ‘Ford Tractors’ as his specialist subject, he succeeded in registering the lowest score in the brief history of the Irish version of the show and also equalled the lowest score ever recorded on the British version, which has been running for years.
Having scored only three points in the specialist subject round, where contestants traditionally hoover up the points, Burke also struggled in the general knowledge rounds and ended up scoring only five points in total.
Explaining his poor performance, Derek is quoted as saying in the Irish Independent: “I’m used to being up on stage with a microphone. It was a daunting situation in that chair, answering questions.
“I would have preferred to pick music as my subject but they (the producers) said I couldn’t do that; so, being into agriculture, I picked tractors.
In fairness to Burke, he wasn’t offering up any excuses and his appearance was in aid of a Multiple Sclerosis charity, for whom he raised €500 and despite a somewhat humbling experience, he said he’d “do it again in the morning”.
Next time he does, flavours of the month, ridiculous dances or funniest Aprés Match sketches (see below) might make for more suitable specialist topics.
