RTE’s Aengus Mac Grianna’s delivery of the news is normally word-perfect and ultra professional, but yesterday he revealed his Achilles heel: the name Roman Abramovich.
Sports broadcasters will be so used to reading Abramovich’s name at this stage that it no longer poses the problems it may have done when the Russian oligarch first took over Chelsea, but it was obviously the first time Aengus had come across it when he was reading out the lunchtime bulletin yesterday.
Commenting on the litigation battle between Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky, Mac Grianna breezed through the pronunciation of Berezovsky’s surname before coming a cropper when referencing the billionaire Chelsea owner.
In fairness to Aengus, after a few attempts – the last of which sounds like an automated computer voice – he gave up trying to mutter it out and even managed a little chuckle at himself before finishing the report.
He’d want to be careful if he ever met him in person mind, who knows what Roman would do if he heard such a grave mispronunciation of his surname?
That doesn't even bear thinking about so for now, just have a listen t Aengus’ little faux pas for yourself in the video above.
Hat-tip to DarraghD on Reddit and SouthParkGobbles on YouTube for this one.
