Chronicle trailer: Here's what could happen if you really had superpowers

The success of the superhero genre in recent years is beginning to inspire directors to explore the underside of superpower discovery. In the case of Chronicle, it's a gift and a curse.

Billed as the biggest 'found footage' release since the likes of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, Chronicle centres around three high school friends that each gain superpowers of telekinesis, flight and invulnerability after making an incredible discovery in a mysterious crater.

The tagline for the film - 'It's all fun and games until everyone gets hurt' - should inform you that their powers don't just involve pranking mothers while they head to the supermarket (as evidenced in the trailer above). No, as the three friends soon begin to find their lives spinning out of control as they embrace the darker sides of their abilities.

One of the biggest attractions for us - aside from the film's unique perspective on the superhero genre - is that the film's story and screenplay are the work of Max Landis, son of John, the man who brought us The Blues Brothers, Coming To America and Trading Places.

In recent times we've seen would-be superheroes get beat up (Kick-Ass), have a laugh (Misfits) and generally forget that "With great power, comes great responsibility", so we can't wait to see Chronicle's take on the edgier side of superpowers. The film hits Irish cinemas on Friday 1 February.
