It's a tough subject to talk about, but it looks as though there’s going to be a rape scene in the new Lara Croft game, which is a bit unsettling we think you'll agree.
According to reports in this morning’s Metro, the new edition of Tomb Raider will see everyone’s favourite heroine being beaten, bruised and taken prisoner by a group of island scavengers before she’s forced to fight off her attackers.
The game’s executive producer Ron Rosenberg revealed the shocking “more mature” twist to the nine-game series.
"It’s a huge step in her evolution: she’s forced to either fight back or die," he reckons.
"When people play Lara, they don’t really project themselves into the character. They’re more like, 'I want to protect her'.
"When you see her have to face these challenges, you start to root for her in a way that you might not root for a male character."
The rape scene has sparked outrage among many women’s rights groups. Holly Dustin, director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, said: "Victimising women and using rape as entertainment is not only misogynistic, it risks normalising and condoning sexual violence to young people."
Thankfully, Lara blasts the head of the bloke the tries to have a go at her, but does that make it okay for the scene to be there in the first place? We think not. We'll just have to wait and see if it's included in the finished project when it hits shelves in Spring 2013.
