The world had eyes on just one Danish player prior to yesterday's shock winner over Holland - Ajax megastar Christian Eriksen. Yet it was his attacking midfielder teammate who got the headlines.
After all the hype, neutral football fans around the world sat down to watch two things: 1) The Dutch run riot over Denmark with their array of attacking options and 2) Find out if Christian Eriksen is worth the hype.
With a long-established manager and an aging squad, there wasn't meant to be too many surprises from the Danes - even though they had finished ahead of fellow Group B side Portugal, a fact many neglected to notice. The prime concern was whether Christin Eriksen - at 19, the youngest player of any country at the World Cup 2010 - could stun Europe and show his true quality.
As you all know, he didn't. Instead a 29-year-old Brondby attacker by the name of Michael Krohn-Dehli took the plaudits, with an expertly handled winning goal that even included a nutmeg of a Dutch defender.
Brondby fans are known to serenade Krohn-Dehli with the line "You are the love of my life, you can knock up my wife" but we reckon all of Denmark were doing the same last night.
A quick glimpse at the player's international record also shows that he's no shrinking violet when it comes to big games, having scored 3 of his 5 goals in a Denmark shirt against Holland, the Danes' next opponent Portugal and of course, their biggest Scandinavian rivals, Sweden.
A big game player that would cost quite little considering that he has been plying his trade in the Danish league, Krohn-Dehli could certainly be worth a look for any number of Premier League sides in the lower half of the table hoping to add a little firepower.
Yet after yesterday's memorable Danish victory, we reckon that Brondby will have a fight on their hands holding onto their star man, especially if he easily outshines the much-vaunted Eriksen once more.
