After a stunning season at Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund, yesterday contract rebel Robert Lewandowski showed just why he is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
With 30 goals in 46 games for Dortmund last season, the 23-year-old helped the club to a league and cup double, though just like his former teammate and new Manchester United star Shinji Kagawa - who, like him, joined Dortmund two years ago - Lewandowski has set his sights higher than Bundesliga glory.
Speaking to German newspaper Bild, the player's agent Maik Barthel told the newspaper last month that his client could be on the move to the Premier League runners-up, just as Kagawa has.
"I can confirm that the [new contract] offer of Borussia Dortmund is insufficient," said Barthel. "I am also able to confirm an interest of Manchester United in the services of Robert Lewandowski."
Last season Lewandowski had a breakout season with Dortmund after replacing then-injured mainstay Lucas Barrios in the squad. Soon the player supplanted his Peruvian rival Lucas Barrios on the teamsheet, with Barrios then joining Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande on June 1.
Aside from Manchester United, the striker is believed to be admired by Arsenal a team that he supports and has spoken highly of, telling FourFourTwo Magazine this month that thanks to Thierry Henry, he is a "great supporter of Arsenal."
The rumour of a move to the Red Devils, however, has not gone away and was only strengthened yesterday by an off-the-cuff remark from Lewandowski's manager at Poland.
"In my opinion, in a moment they will be gone from Borussia,"Smuda said of Dortmund’s trio of Polish stars. "'Lewy' is going to Manchester United, Kuba [Polish captain Kuba Blaszczykowski] also somewhere in England, Piszczek [right-back Lukasz Piszczek] to Real [Madrid]."
To his credit, Lewandowski would not be drawn on the subject after his star performance in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Greece, stating only: "I am so happy to score this goal in the opening match. But I'm not going to concentrate on these issues [joining United].
"Euro 2012 is the priority. I'm totally focused on the national team."
