Given the current relationship between the two countries on the political stage, you might have thought the Germans would go easy on Greece last night. They didn’t.
Despite giving them a glimmer of hope just after half-time when Georgios Samaras equalised for Greece, Germany were completely dominant and once again showed why they are being tipped by many to spoil the Spanish party and to go on win the tournament next month.
Philip Lahm and Miroslav Klose also got on the scoresheet, but the abiding memories from last night’s encounter in Gdansk were two stunning volleys from Sami Khedira and Marco Reus in the second half.
Khedira struck to reassert Germany’s supremacy after Greece’s equaliser, scissor kicking Jerome Boateng’s cross in spectacular fashion to put Jogi Lowe’s side 2-1 in front.
Miroslav Klose made it 3-1 before Marco Reus, who was very impressive having been handed a starting berth by Loew, rammed home the best finish of the night with a smashing first time volley that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Cue the inevitable Rolls Reus references from television commentators, but in fairness, Germany look to be motoring as smoothly as one at the moment and will be very hard to stop.
