Video: The Polish people miss Irish football fans so much, they’re still singing our songs in Poznan

If you wanted to know just how much of a legacy Irish football fans left behind them in Poland during the Euros, then this little clip should give you a good idea.

The Irish team may have flattered to deceive – miserably so – during the tournament, but our fans certainly didn’t let us down and whatever Roy Keane or anyone else has to say about them, they left a lasting impression on the Polish people after our all too brief spell at the Euros.

The people of Poznan recognised the Irish support by organising a farewell party in the city on the day of the Italy game last week and although we’re at the semi-final stage, the departure of the Irish fans is still being lamented by residents of the city, who broke into a version of Stand Up for the Boys in Green in a fanzone before the Spain v Portugal game last night.

The footage in the video above was captured by Polish TV channel TVN24.pl last night and those in the fanzone had obviously seen numerous renditions of the song over the last few weeks, because they all knew to get down on their hunkers for the quiet part of the song before rising to their feet to sing the rousing chorus yet again.

The video may evoke nostalgia for a couple of weeks ago when it was our own supporters singing the song while still holding out hope for making some sort of impact on the tournament, but it’s still nice to be appreciated all the same.

Check out the Polish fans giving it socks in the video above.

A big hat-tip to the folks at Balls.ie for bringing this one to our attention.
