Being a fan is a powerless experience. Yes you can sing your heart out, shout abuse at the ref and join in with a Mexican wave but that’s very unlikely to change what happens on the pitch.

So, in a way, hats off to this England fan who realised his team were in deep trouble against Italy on Sunday. As Alessandro Diamanti lined up to take the potentially game winning kick for the Azzurri in Kiev he dropped his shorts in a bid to distract the former West Ham man.

We don’t know if Diamanti never saw him, or if, as a professional footballer, he has seen more meat and two veg than most of us have had hot dinners. Anyway, the ball flew past Joe Hart and England were out.

We just hope the mystery man hasn’t started a trend. The last thing we want to see at the weekend is half of Hill 16 trying to put a Wexford forward off.
