Anton Ferdinand subject of death threat before highly charged FA Cup tie
Reports in England are suggesting that Anton Ferdinand received a malicious package, possibly containing a bullet, ahead of today’s FA Cup clash with Chelsea.
The fixture is bound to be a highly charged affair given that it is the first time that Ferdinand will share a pitch with John Terry since the England captain was accused of racially abusing the less talented of the Ferdinand brothers late last year.
A letter sent to Queens Park Rangers and addressed to Ferdinand is currently being investigated by Hammersmith and Fulham police amid reports that it contained a spent gun cartridge, reports that have yet to be confirmed by the club or the police.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "I can confirm we are investigating an allegation of malicious communication received today at Queens Park Rangers Football Club. Officers from Hammersmith and Fulham are investigating."
The clash between the sides could hardly could at a more inopportune time, as Terry’s case is set to be heard in court next week after he was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence for the initial row with Ferdinand in the Premier League meeting between the sides.
Both Chelsea and QPR have gone out of their way to appeal for calm from both sets of supporters and security will be ramped up Loftus Road for the early afternoon kick-off.
All eyes will, of course, be on Ferdinand and Terry immediately prior to the game, when for the second time in two years, the controversial England captain faces rejection and humiliation by non-handshake.
