Are Liverpool really prepared to let Daniel Agger join Man City?

06/08/2012 4:24 pm

It is being reported today that Liverpool are prepared to sell Daniel Agger to Manchester City to raise transfer market funds for Brendan Rodgers.

Whispers about Danish defender Danier Agger packing his bags this summer have been rife. Two clubs, Manchester City and Barcelona, were supposed to be in pursuit of the 27-year-old but we thought there was nothing to it. Liverpool surely wouldn’t let a defensive lynchpin leave as they try to start again under Brendan Rodgers.

Then the Dane didn’t travel with the Reds to Belarus for their Europa League qualifier last week and then his agent said this: "He is not injured in any way. Only the club and the manager can answer why he is not in the squad."

That heaped more fuel on the fire and while Rodgers claimed that Agger was always going to be left at home, the story hasn’t gone away.

Today, Sky Sports are reporting that Liverpool have rejected two bids already for the player but that they may agree to a third one from City if the fee is high enough. According to Sky, Rodgers needs to sell before he can buy and flogging Agger would free up some funds.

It seems £20m is the amount Liverpool want but that sounds a little high for somebody who has made just over 100 Premier League starts in six-and-a-half years at Anfield. If fit, Agger is a top-class defender but as he is usually good for one big injury every season, maybe Rodgers is right to cash in.

With Andy Carroll seemingly staying put now and with Albert Aquilani gone back to Fiorentina on the cheap, perhaps Agger out is required to bring in Joe Allen, the man Rodgers really wants this summer.
