Are Manchester United really interested in Ashley Cole?

27/10/2012 12:22 pm

Ahead of their big game tomorrow a doozy of a rumour has emerged in today’s papers about a possible move by Manchester United for Chelsea's Ashley Cole.

Even though he is 31, Ashley Cole is still right up there with the best in the world in his position. But it seems that Chelsea are digging their heels over a new contract and the England defender could be picked up for free as he is out of contract this summer.

We’re sure they would be no shortage of offers for Cole if he is to leave but we didn’t expect Manchester United to be one of those in the hunt. However, according to today’s Daily Mail, that is exactly what Fergie is planning to do.

The paper reports that Ferguson has always liked Cole and with Patrice Evra clearly not the player he once was, it seems United fancy replacing the Frenchman with the Englishman.

The fact that the story comes out the day before the two sides meet makes us more than a little suspicious that this isn’t just a bit of play acting by someone in Old Trafford to wind the Blues up but stranger things have happened.

Cole is close friends with Wayne Rooney, according to the paper, and any potential conflict with Rio Ferdinand appears to be resolved.

We’re still not convinced but the interest by United, if real, might force Chelsea into coming up with a better deal for Cole than the one-year contract currently on the table.

Should make tomorrow’s game even more interesting.
