Arsenal tell RVP they will not sell him "at any price"

21/02/2012 12:36 pm

Arsenal have reportedly told star striker Robin van Persie that he will see out the remainder of his contract until the end of the 2012/2013 season, no matter what summer bids are made.

According to an exclusive report from Goal.com, the Gunners have told the Dutch international that they will refuse bids "at any price" during the summer, allowing the player to leave on a free transfer in 2013 if he refuses to sign a new contract.

The report further states that Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has intervened in negotiations over a new deal for the 28-year-old, while Goal write that Van Persie feels "powerless" in his determination to make a leap from North London.

“The communication has come directly from Ivan Gazidis,” a source told the site. “He flatly refuses to sell him at any price. He has told Van Persie, ‘you are going nowhere and can see out your contract’.

“Arsenal are not stupid. If he sees out his contract he will be 30. Real Madrid and Barcelona are not going to buy him at 30."

“Van Persie feels powerless and anxious.  There is no way any club will pay £40m for him this summer, because of his age. This makes him a £20m player and Arsenal don’t need to sell him for that.”

Previously it had been generally believed by a majority of Arsenal fans that the striker would likely sign a new contract should his club reach a minimum of fourth place in the Premier League this season to ensure Champions League qualification, yet it is feared that last week's Champions League humiliation and FA Cup exit may have disillusioned the club's captain to irreparable levels.

Either way, if Arsenal are indeed planning to hold onto their prized asset until the remainder of his contract is seen out, such a stance would mimic the Gunners' initial approach to handling a disgruntled Samir Nasri last week.

However, the Frenchman eventually left for an irresistible figure of £24 million, clubs will likely not be dissuaded to bid for Van Persie after Arsenal informed buyers last season that every player has his price.
