According to reports today, Robbie Keane’s stay in LA is about to be cut short, to make room for Frank Lampard.
When Robbie Keane upped sticks and moved to LA to play with David Beckham we thought it was an odd move. Aged just 31 we felt he still had a bit to offer in the Premier League, but we don’t blame the Ireland captain for choosing the California sunshine over the weather in this part of the world either.
After capturing the MLS title in his first season the move was success for LA Galaxy but this season is going badly for the champs, and Robbie is getting a bit of grief from the fans. Since returning from the Euros Robbie has missed a host of chances as the Galaxy slip towards the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
To fix that slide the Irish Daily Mail is reporting that the Galaxy are plotting to ditch Keane so they can bring in Frank Lampard. Keane is one of three ‘Designated Players’ on the Galaxy’s books (with Beckham and Landon Donovan) and MLS clubs can only have three of these players who earn big bucks.
To bring in Lampard, who was pictured at a Galaxy game this week, one of the three has to go and Robbie is the prime candidate. However, Villa fans hoping he might head back to them will be disappointed as the paper reports Keane is more likely to be traded to the Chicago Fire or the Montreal Impact.
Keane turns 32 today and as it stands he is still Ireland’s goalscorer-in-chief. All Ireland fans need Robbie playing well and scoring regularly so we hope he either hits form soon and saves his Galaxy spot or he moves to club where he will get his game back.
