Once the best of enemies, Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira put the past behind them with an emotional and somewhat cringe-worthy TV reunion last night.
Keane and Vieira were on duty for ITV’s coverage of the Villarreal v Manchester City game in El Madrigal and shared laughs and jokes as if the famous rivalry between the pair that defined the battle between United and Arsenal in the late 90s and early 00s never existed.
Above anyone that got that vein throbbing in the Corkman’s temple, it was the volatile Frenchman who irked him the most and they went head to head on numerous occasions, most famously when they clashed in the tunnel at Highbury in 2005, when Vieira tried to intimidate poor Gary Neville and Keane had a pop at Vieira for his repeated declarations of love for Senegal.
But was the Keane/Vieira love in all just an act? Was Roy merely laughing on the outside yet secretly plotting to kill him on the inside? Judging by the half-pained, half giggly look on his face above, Roy had revenge on the mind, and as Alf-Inge Haaland will testify, he’s not afraid to wait to dish out some old fashioned retribution.
Some might say the pair have buried the hatchet, but we reckon that if Roy had the chance, the hatchet would be buried alright, deep within Vieira’s stomach that is.
