We know Luis Suarez wasn’t entirely blameless for his role in the whole Patrice Evra affair, but that doesn’t mean that he should be blamed for absolutely everything.

Blaming Suarez was the way a judge in Manchester chose to react recently, however, when a man appeared in front of him for the rather heinous crime of hitting his wife in the eye with a remote control immediately after seeing Suarez infamously refuse to shake Patrice Evra’s hand on the news.

According to a report in the Manchester Evening News, United fan Graham Trelfa got so angry after witnessing the incident that he threw the remote control in his partner's face.

Rather than dismiss it as the quite dismal excuse that is was, the judge decided instead to indulge the offended United fan and launched into a rant about the behaviour of Suarez, who he labelled as a ‘spoilt child’.

Although he said that Suarez’s actions were not directly responsible for Trelfa’s behaviour, the judge added: “The actions of Mr Suarez were at best ill-considered and at worst the actions of a petulant individual who behaved like a spoilt child and brought contempt on both his club and the many professional footballers who conduct themselves properly week-in, week-out.

“It's undoubtedly the case that the actions of a so-called role model can affect the behaviour of many and the need to act responsibly both on and off the field as they hold privileged position and are idolised by many.”

Simply throwing the remote at his partner was no mere accident it seems. The report adds that Trelfa, who was under the influence of a few cans of cider at the time, subsequently grabbed his wife and hurled her to the floor before storming out of the house.

Trelfa was arrested and pleaded guilty to common assault, but got away fairly lightly with a 12-month community order and £85 in costs. Reports that he has been banned from watching the next eight Man United games on television has yet to be substantiated.

He apologised for his actions afterwards, saying: “I would like to apologise for what happened and I'm relieved with the judge's decision. I saw the snub and it just made me angry. It annoyed me so much.”

So what’s the lesson to be learned from all of this? Blame Luis Suarez, it’s so much easier (we’re joking Liverpool fans).
