It’s still very early days in the Brendan Rodgers era at Liverpool, but after a rather turbulent week for the Reds, owner John Henry has appealed for calm amongst the club’s supporters.
The discontent amongst Liverpool fans was palpable on Friday evening as hour after hour passed without any additions to a squad that was weakened – in a numbers sense at least – by the departures of the likes of Andy Carroll and Jay Spearing.
Despite stressing his desire to join Liverpool, main target Clint Dempsey ended up at Spurs and to finish off a dire few days, Arsenal snatched a 2-0 victory at Anfield yesterday to leave Liverpool with only one point from three games, a return that has left them in the relegation zone with only QPR and Southampton beneath them.
It’s far too early to panic, of course, but sensing the disquiet amongst the club’s support, John Henry today issued an open letter to Liverpool fans attempting to explain the club’s transfer policy in recent times and their need to be fiscally proficient after some, eh, lavish spending during the Kenny Dalglish era.
You can read the letter in full here, but below are a few of the standout quotes from what is a fairly lengthy address.
“I am as disappointed as anyone connected with Liverpool Football Club that we were unable to add further to our strike force in this summer transfer window, but that was not through any lack of desire or effort on the part of all of those involved.”
“We are still in the process of reversing the errors of previous regimes. It will not happen overnight. It has been compounded by our own mistakes in a difficult first two years of ownership. It has been a harsh education, but make no mistake, the club is healthier today than when we took over.”
“We will never place this club in the precarious position that we found it in when we took over at Anfield. This club should never again run up debts that threaten its existence.
“Most of all, we want to win. That ambition drives every decision. It is the Liverpool way. We can and will generate the revenues to achieve that aim. There will be short-term setbacks from time to time, but we believe we have the right people in place to bring more glory to Anfield.”
It might be a tough time at Anfield at the moment, but after reading the letter, Liverpool fans will be in no doubt who's boss,
