When it comes to boundless energy in the green jersey of Ireland, few have contributed more to the cause than Robbie Keane. His longevity and goals mark him as one of the best we have ever had.
By Declan Whooley
In recent weeks we have marvelled at some GAA and rugby sports people who have dedicated themselves diligently to their sport and team. Since making his debut in 1998, the Tallaght man has given his all for the Irish cause at a time when many footballers have not placed such importance on their international careers.
Part of the ‘golden generation’ of underage footballers in the 1990s, he first came to prominence in the side that won the 1998 U-18 European Championships in Cyprus, while also featured in the 1999 World Youth Cup in Nigeria, losing to the hosts in the last 16 on penalties.
Making his debut against the Czech Republic in March 1998, his first senior goal came against Malta in October of that year. He quickly became the focal point of the Irish attack in Mick McCarthy’s side, helping Ireland on their way to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. And who can ever forget THAT goal against the Germans, plus the reaction of his manager.
Keane also lead the line of attack for the Euro’s last summer, but as we all know, that campaign was very disappointing from an Irish perspective. Unfortunately for Keane, he has suffered more criticism than he deserves for the current state of the national team. His game lacks certain qualities, but when it comes to goalscoring – a striker’s primary function – his international record is up there with the best. Little surprise when he has amassed 54 goals in an Ireland jersey.
The Dubliner is joint second with Raul and Jan Koller on the list of all-time top scorers in European Championship qualification, while he is ranked 27th on a list of highest ever goalscorers at international level. Considering that Stern John and a Thai striker are in the top 10 – no offence to those players, but more a reflection of the quantity of games rather than quality of opposition - , it shows just how impressive his prowess in front of goals has been.
Keane has had his detractors throughout his career, but when he finally decides to hang-up his boots, it will take some beating to surpass his goalscoring record. Added to that he has also scored some of the most important goals of our recent history.
You're unlikely to see a finer exponent of boundless energy.
