Alfredo Di Stefano, one of the greatest footballers of all time, has sadly passed away at the age of 88.

Di Stefano, who is probably the most famous player in the history of Real Madrid and was the club’s honorary president, suffered a heart attack at the weekend having just celebrated his 88th birthday and sadly passed away earlier today.

Born in Buenos Aires, Di Stefano enjoyed a remarkable football career, playing for River Plate in Argentina and Millonarios in Colombia before joining Real Madrid in 1953. Di Stefano helped Los Blancos to eight Spanish league titles and five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960. He was named as European Footballer of the Year in 1957 and 1959 and is the only player in history to score in five different European Cup finals.

With 307 goals in all competitions, Di Stefano is the second-highest goalscorer in Real Madrid’s history behind Raul, while on the international stage he represented Argentina and Colombia before going onto win over 30 caps for Spain in the late 50s and early 60s.

A true legend of the game, he’ll be sorely missed.
