Spurs boss Harry Redknapp revealed today that he hasn’t even thought about succeeding Fabio Capello as England manager, but does anybody really believe him?
Many bookmakers have already suspended betting on Redknapp taking the job, while Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and eh, Barry Fry (very vehemently so, in fact) are among those who have publicly endorsed him as Capello’s successor.
Seeing as he was expected to take over from Capello in the summer before the Italian decided to resign, it would be a surprise if he wasn’t on the touchline in time for the Euros.
A surprise to everyone but Redknapp himself, it seems, as he revealed this morning that he hasn’t even begun to think about the England job, news that will come as a relief to Spurs fans, at least until he inevitably changes his mind a few days from now.
Speaking to Sky through his favourite medium of wound-down car window this morning, Redknapp said: "I've not even thought about it (the England job). I've got a job to do. I've got a big game on Saturday for Tottenham. Tottenham is my focus… They (the FA) will make whatever decision they want to make. Hopefully it'll be the right decision for the country but my focus is all on Tottenham."
On Capello, Redknapp said he didn’t see it coming, which would contradict evidence emanating from a photo that was doing the rounds on the internet last night.
"I was shocked. I was surprised. I didn't expect that to happen. We knew he was going to leave in the summer. I didn't expect it to happen now," Redknapp added, before reiterating his love for good old Spurs with words that will ultimately prove hollow a little further down the line when he does take the England job.
"Tottenham have been fantastic to me," Redknapp continued.
"The fans last week at the Wigan game … it was incredible the reception they gave me. It wouldn't be right for them, to focus on anything else but Tottenham. That's my only interest, is Tottenham Hotspur."
For now, Harry, for now.
