Scottish League Cup: Rangers defeat Celtic after extra time

20/03/2011 6:11 pm

A goal from Nikica Jelavic earned Rangers their 27th Scottish League Cup title.

Rangers 2-1 Celtic (AET)

Rangers took the lead in the 24 th minute through Northern Ireland international Steven Davis after Celtic lost the ball in midfield.

The 26-year-old then ran at the opposition defence before unleashing a left-footer that gave Fraser Forster in the Hoops goal no chance.

Seven minutes later, Celtic were level when the recently prolific Joe Ledley headed home after Georgios Samaras flicked it on.

It looked like Rangers had been awarded a penalty just on the half hour, only for striker Nikica Jelavic to be booked for simulation.

There were no goals in the second period, though Fraser Forster pulled off a magnificent save from a Gregg Wylde free-kick.

Rangers scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute of extra-time, when a through-ball parted the Celtic defence and Jelavic got a shot off.

His attempt came off the post and rolled across the goal-line, only to sneak over the line.

Celtic piled on the pressure towards the end and goalkeeper Fraser Forster even went up for corners.

It was from one of these set-pieces that Rangers broke away and Emilio Izaguirre fouled Vladimir Weiss, earning himself a red card.
