Footballer Andriy Shevchenko has decided to retire and go into politics.
The 35-year-old striker rounded off a great career this summer as he played superbly in the European Championships being played in his native homeland, scoring two memorable headers as captain of Ukraine against Sweden in the group stages.
Shevchenko announced the news on his club Dynamo Kiev’s website saying, "This will probably shock everyone, my future will no longer be in football. I will give more information tomorrow but I will be going into politics.I hope for your support."
For the Ukraine he netted 48 goals in 111 games, scoring 219 goals in 446 games altogether. He retires as the third most prolific goalscorer ever in European football, His career highlights will feature a Champions League win with Milan in 2003 and the Ballon D’Or in 2004.
The career highlights will probably not feature his three year stint at Chelsea, where he was brought in by Roman Abramovich but failed to secure a regular starting position.
He follows players like fellow AC Milan alumnus George Weah, Brazilian greats Romario and Roberto Carlos in pursuing a career in politics post-football.
