What more could you ask for than a recreation of one of the most tortured handshakes in Irish sport in Subbuteo form.
We don’t want to ruin your Friday but we are going to delve into Saipan again, the most painful moment in Irish soccer. Thankfully, this is more of a light-hearted look so there should be no family fall outs or punch ups over this one.
To promote his book on that most troubled of times between Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane, It Started With A Handshake, author Diarmuid O’hAinle decided to get that infamous handshake modeled.
But rather than choose marble or some other substance, Diarmuid chose that most football of mediums, the Subbuteo figure. Even though Fifa 13 now rules the roost, there are still many fans of the old flick football out there.
One massive fan is English artist Terry Lee, who recreates various famous footballing moments using remodeled Subbuto figures.

As you can see, he has perfectly recreated that moment, post the majestic win over Holland at Lansdowne Road in 2001 when it was clear, literally and figuratively, that our best player and our manager didn’t see eye to eye.
Fast forward nine months and we had Saipan but as Diarmuid says, it all started with that handshake.
Lee has created dozens of Subbuteo artworks and you can check out his work here and even buy one if you like. The book is available on iTunes here.
Hat tip to the lads at Pogmogoal for sending our way.
