Things must be bad at Man United when they can't afford their own hats
We knew Manchester United were having financial troubles, but we didn’t think it was that bad that they can’t even afford their own hats.
The fact that United are in the financial sh*tter is the only logical conclusion to draw from a photograph taken at the Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday night, as the players went through their paces for last night’s 2-0 victory over Ajax.
As you can see above, the club are so strapped for cash that they have been forcing staff members, including Sir Alex Ferguson, to wear beanie hats borrowed from the Welsh Rugby Union that are redder than Fergie’s face, which is some achievement.
After seeing the picture, United fans will be entitled to ask how the club are supposed to afford the new players they badly need when they can’t afford their own training gear.
Rumours that the hat was a gift to Fergie from Welshman Ryan Giggs and that he has been wearing it for years have been suggested since and would seem to offer a fairly understandable explanation for Fergie’s fashion faux-pas, but we’re not buying that, not for one second.
A tip of the hat to @cryantipp for sending that one onto us.
