Transfer Talk August 22: Spurs go Brazilian, Aiden McGeady and Zorro
You can tell we are getting close to the end of August as the transfer speculation in today’s papers is both plentiful and a little bit crazy.
If there is one team we are struggling to figure out at the moment it is Tottenham. Fourth last season, they had a more than decent squad but this summer has been a bit odd. Luka Modric seems to be on his way, Ledley King has retired and while Jan Verthongen and Gylfi Sigurdsson are good players, we wondered where the goals would come from.
But at last AVB has started to make some progress. Emmanuel Adebayor was secured last night and if today’s papers are to be believed, the fella in charge of registering players at White Hart Lane is going to be very busy this month.
The Mail claim that Brazilian duo Willian and Leandro Damiao are being targetted by Spurs. The former plays for Shakhtar and is a winger/striker, while the latter still plays in his native Brazil and was top scorer in the Olympics. A figure of £20million is mentioned for Willian and while no number is mentioned for the Damiao, he won’t come cheap either. If both arrive, Spurs could be great to watch this season.
Meanwhile the London Evening Standard reckon that Roma’s Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic will also be on his way to White Hart Lane. If only for the ‘Pjanic on the streets of London’ headline, we hope it happens.
In a bit of winger news, the Sun reports that Nani is headed for the Old Trafford exit as Fergie is unhappy with his form but they want £30m for the Portuguese international, with Zenit St Petersburg rumoured to be interested.
In other Russian wing news, our own Aiden McGeady may end his mission to Moscow to play with James McClean at Sunderland, as Martin O’Neill is reported to fancy a reunion with his old Celtic player.
In some news best described as ‘speculative’, Arsenal are interested in bringing in Cheick Tiote from Newcastle to replace Alex Song, Chelsea want to pair Edinson Cavani with Fernando Torres at a cost of £35m and countless Alice bands and QPR have already seen enough of Rob Green and want to ditch the keeper for the Holy Goalie, Artur Boruc.
Finally, in news that can only gladden the heart of any headline writer, Manchester United are ‘tracking’ Mexico’s Olympic star Hector Herrera. The 22-year-old midfielder is a class act but the best part is that he is known as Zorro. If he joins, brace yourself for an endless amount of references to masks, rapiers, swords and curses. We can’t wait.
