A 21-year-old student in the UK has been jailed today after inciting racial hatred with a series of sick tweets that mocked Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba after he suffered a heart attack during a recent FA Cup tie.
Swansea University biology undergraduate Liam Stacey caused online revulsion after tweeting while the 23-year-old Bolton Wanderers star was fighting for his life after suffering a heart attack during his club's recent FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur on March 17.
LOL. F**k Muamba. He's dead!!!", began the first the Mr Stacey's tweets, followed by a string of further offensive comments, largely racially-motivated, which he sent to those who took offence over his comments.
Last week the student admitted inciting racial hatred at an appearance at Swansea Magistrates Court, while today District Judge John Charles told Mr Stacey: "In my view there is no alternative to an immediate prison sentence. It was not the football world who was praying for him... everybody was praying for his life."
The case of Mr Stacey's isn't the first punishment for a Twitter user's racially abusive comments, as last week another student, 21-year-old Joshua Cryer, was ordered to complete a two-year community order for abusive tweets sent to former Liverpool star Stan Collymore.
