Manchester United appear to have edged ahead of Man City and Barcelona in the back-and-forth race to sign sought-after Chilean Alexis Sanchez.
The ever-cheeky David Gill has flown to Spain to meet Udinese president Gino Pozzo under the noses of the Nou Camp bosses – in Barcelona.
Man City had hoped that its big money move would be enough to tempt the star of the 2010 World Cup.
However, when asked about whether the deal with the 22-year-old was set to go through, his agent Fernando Felicevich said, “An agreement with City? Sanchez’s future is still very much wide open. We are working on it and, after meetings with City, we have other new appointments.”
United had hoped to bring the winger to Old Trafford for around €25m, but interest from a range of other clubs has meant they had to increase their offer to closer to the €30m mark.
If the deal does go through, it will take free-spending Fergie’s outlay during the transfer window to €93m having already made big money moves for Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea.
