Conor Clifford has earned a surprising call-up to the Ireland squad ahead of the Germany game on Friday. Here’s a reminder of what he’s capable of.
Chelsea youngster Clifford, who is currently on loan at Portsmouth in League One, was called up to the squad this evening to provide cover in midfield with Glenn Whelan missing out through injury.
Clifford’s elevation to senior duties comes as something as a surprise considering he has only been involved with Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad on one previous occasion and that was over a year ago as an unused sub in a friendly against Croatia last August.
Still, there’s no doubting Clifford’s potential to make an impact down the road, something that was flagged in the FA Youth Cup Final a couple of years back when he captained Chelsea to victory over Aston Villa and scored a belter of a goal while he was at it (see video above).
If he is involved against Germany or against the Faroes next week, another goal of this calibre would certainly be appreciated.
We wish him all the best.
