Video: A round-up of all the spectacular goals scored last night

16/08/2012 9:50 am

Ireland and Serbia failed miserably to rattle the onion sack in Belgrade, but there were a few cracking strikes in the various international friendlies that took place last night.

With domestic seasons around Europe getting underway in the next couple of weeks, the minds of a lot of the international players were elsewhere and, as is unfortunately not often enough the case on the international scene, there was plenty of open and free flowing football as a result.

The goals came thick and fast and there were no shortage of spectacular ones. Closest to home, Finland’s Perparim Hetemaj struck this belter of a free-kick in a 3-3 draw with Northern Ireland at Windsor Park.

In the unfortunately titled Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, meanwhile, England showed just why their third place FIFA ranking is, eh, completely justified with a 2-1 victory over Italy that came courtesy of a late effort from Jermain Defoe.

Saving the best until last, the goal of the night came from Real Madrid’s Angel di Maria in Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Germany, a game in which Lionel Messi showed that he is in fact human when he missed from the penalty spot. What does that matter, however, when your teammates are scoring goals like this to make up for it?

Pick that one out.
