Video: David Silva tries to beat Shane Long for worst penalty of the weekend award
Was David Silva’s penalty miss for Man City against Southampton worse than Shane Long’s yesterday? It certainly wasn’t far off.
With Sergio Aguero off injured, the impish Spaniard stepped up ahead of Carlos Tevez to take the spot-kick in the first half, a decision he would immediately live to regret when he took the tamest of shots that was easily saved by Saints ‘keeper Kelvin Davis.
Like Long yesterday, Silva was probably hoping to give the ‘keeper the eyes in the hope that he would blink first, but even if you do that you still have to hit the ball with some degree of conviction, something that neither Silva or Long could manage.
It was only one incident in what was a crazy game overall, with the newly promoted side really putting it up to the Champions and deserving of more than a 3-2 defeat. Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri got the goals for Citeh, with Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis responding for Nigel Adkins’ side.
In the earlier kick-off, Eden Hazard starred as Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard helped Chelsea to a 2-0 win although to the dismay of Fantasy Football managers everywhere, Fernando Torres failed to get on the scoresheet.
Premier League results:
Wigan 0-2 Chelsea
Manchester City 3-2 Southampton
