Video: Messi scores another wonderful free-kick

14/10/2012 12:32 pm

There’s something reassuringly wonderful about the best sportspeople doing their thing and Lionel Messi was at it again last night with this freekick.

Messi led his Argentina side to a 3-Nil victory over a tough Uruguay side who featured the amazing attacking trio of Cavani, Forlan and Suarez.

Messi scored two and was instrumental in his friend and Man City striker Aguero’s goal as Argentina took another step toward qualification for Brazil 2014.

The pick of the goals was this free-kick which showed Messi's genius as he tricked the defenders into jumping and sent the ball in under the feet of the defenders.

Much like Pirlo’s celebrated panenka penalty during the summer it requires a special player of vision, imagination and a modicum of genius to pull off this technique.

After the game Messi revealed himself to be  student of the game saying of the freekick: “I saw that Ronaldinho and Pirlo both scored similar goals, the goalkeeper knew that I like to shoot over the top and was flat-footed. I anticipated that he was going to jump and for that reason decided to go underneath.”

It’s Messi’s second brilliant free-kick in a week, having scored a cracker against Real in El Classico last Sunday.

It’s also vindication for Messi as for a player that is often accused of playing poorly for his country, he has now scored 12 goals in his last 7 games for his country.
