Defence-splitting pass by Rooney, beautiful finish by Van Persie; this bodes well for the future, Manchester United fans.

A single-goal win over Romanian opposition in the Champions League might not be much to write home about, but Manchester United fans will be excited about the potential of the Rooney/Van Persie partnership having seen the Dutchman strike a delightful winner this evening.

United looked to be knee-deep in trouble in Cluj when they fell behind to a Pantelis Kapetanos goal after only 14 minutes, but a header, or more accurately, a fortuitous shoulder from Van Persie put them level on the half-hour mark.

The contrast between RVP’s first and second couldn’t have been greater, however, as the deadly Dutchman applied the most subtle of finishes to a lovely chipped through ball from Rooney on the right wing.

Another unconvincing display by United then, but a few more of these combinations from Rooney and Van Persie throughout the season will make the fans happy.
