That headline might sound just a little bit confusing, but trust us, that’s exactly what happened.

Remember Lee Dong-Gook of Middlesbrough fame? The South Korean international won’t be going down in history as one of the club’s greatest players after his performances on Teeside and ‘Boro fans would be forgiven for raising an eyebrow if they heard he scored a 40-yard cracker for his current club Jeonbuk Motors. They would be less surprised to hear that he didn’t actually mean to score it, or at least he claims he didn’t, as when the responsibility fell to him to give the ball back to the opposition, Seongnam, during a game recently, he promptly rattled the ball over the ‘keeper and into the net from 40 yards. Because Seongnam were winning 2-1 before Dong-Gook’s strike, his actions understandably didn’t go down too well and there was plenty of protesting from the Seongnam players, but the ref could hardly go and disallow the goal, could he? Instead, after a few minutes mucking about, a compromise was reached whereby Jeonbuk Motors agreed to deliberately score an own goal to restore Seongnam’s lead, leading to the quite farcical scenes evident in the video above.
