Video: Spurs fans will be hoping for more of this from Jan the man next season
After a lengthy pursuit, Tottenham Hotspur have finally announced the signing of Jan Vertonghen from Ajax. Here’s what Spurs fans can expect from the Belgian defender next season.
Spurs confirmed Vertonghen’s arrival on their website this morning and although a fee has not been confirmed, it is thought that he cost the North London side around £9 million.
Highly rated in Holland, Vertonghen was named the Eredivisie Player of the Year as well as Ajax’s Player of the Year after a season in which he scored ten goals in 37 appearances, not bad at all for a man who primarily plays at the heart of the defence but can shift into midfield if required.
The 25-year old has made over 200 appearances and scored 28 goals since making his debut for the Dutch side aged 19 in 2006 and despite his tender years, he has racked up 37 caps for a Belgian team that you might be hearing an awful lot about in the near future.
If he can live up to his potential, Spurs could have quite a player on their hands and although we must constantly stress the perils of the YouTube footballer, judging by the video of his best Ajax goals above*, he could make an impact at both ends of the pitch.
*Please discount number 9 from that list as that was entirely down to a horrendous Taibi-like mistake from the opposition ‘keeper. Number 1's not half bad, mind.
