Video: Watch Georgios Samaras hand Celtic a historic Champions League victory
Spartak Moscow 2-3 Celtic
Celtic won an away match in Europe's premier club competition for the first time in 26 years tonight. And, boy did they do it in dramatic fashion.
The Hoops hadn’t won an away game in the European Cup or the Champions League since beating, would you believe, Shamrock Rovers in 1986 and Moscow ain’t exactly the easiest place to go when you’re looking for a handy three points away from home in Europe.
Gary Hooper set the tone with a lovely finish to put the visitors ahead early on, but two goals from Emmanuel Emenike either side of half-time put Spartak back in the driving seat.
Helped by the dismissal of Juan Insaurralde, Neil Lennon’s men drew level again through a deflected Jamie Forrest effort before Samaras sent the visiting fans into dreamland with a winning header in the dying stages.
Not such a great night for Aiden McGeady against his old club, but a memorable one for the Scottish champs, who now have four points from their opening two Champions League group games.
The prospect of Celtic qualifying for the latter stages of the competition, a task that had seemed like Mission Impossible, or at least Mission Improbable, now doesn’t seem so far-fetched after all.
Check out Samaras’ winner for yourself in the video above.
