Not only will Ryan Giggs play in his first international tournament at the London Olympics, he’ll do as skipper of the Great Britain team.
The wily old Manchester United midfielder was one of three over-aged players included in Stuart Pearce’s Olympic squad and as he is by some distance the most experienced and decorated player, Psycho has called on him to lead the Great Britain team into a competition where they will probably come up short against vastly more talented Spanish and Brazilian sides.
The Football Association confirmed Giggs’ captaincy in a statement on their website this morning which read: "Stuart Pearce has today (Sunday) confirmed that Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs will be captain of the Team GB Men's football squad at London 2012.
"Giggs, a winner of 12 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two UEFA Champions League competitions, will be competing at his first international tournament.
"Giggs is one of the three 'over age' players permitted under the Olympic football tournament rules, alongside fellow Welshman Craig Bellamy and Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards.
"Team GB will play their first match in half a century when they take on Brazil at the Riverside Stadium on Friday 20 July."
The omission of Giggs’ teammate David Beckham from the squad has undoubtedly been the biggest story surrounding Team GB to date, but unlike Becks, Giggs has continued to play to a high standard at the highest level for the last few years and there won’t be many – bar a few angry ex-lovers, perhaps – who will begrudge him the honour of captaining the Great Britain team.
