Wayne Rooney draws Twitter ire for mocking Manchester City's Toure brothers' final defeat

13/02/2012 8:16 am

As football fans watched Zambia's incredible penalty shootout victory over the Ivory Coast, one Premier League star was otherwise occupied - but still had enough to say on the matter.

After some of the best struck penalties we've ever seen in international football, Zambia emerged last night as African Cup of Nations winners over the hotly-tipped Ivory Coast, a side with Premier League stars such as Didier Drogba, Gervinho (who missed the final penalty) and of course, Manchester City's Toure brothers, Yaya and Kolo.

One man glued to the TV last night was Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who tweeted his 312,000+ followers: "Congrats to zambia great story! Bin one of the most eventful weeks in football I can remember!"

The 'story' which Cleverely alluded to is that Zambia won the tournament held in Gabon 19 years after much of the country's side perished in a plane crash. Nearly twenty years later, the country has made the site of the greatest tragedy the site of their greatest triumph, as this year's African Cup of Nations were once again held in Gabon.

However, this was lost on Manchester United's two-goal hero in their 2-1 victory over Liverpool last Saturday, Wayne Rooney. The striker had instead been watching golf but saw fit to mock what he deemed to have been the pointless efforts of Manchester rivals Yaya and Kolo Toure. See below:

The tweet itself received a torrent of criticism from non-Manchester United fans on the micro-blogging site, with The Times writer Rory Smith pointedly tweeting: "That Toure tweet is pretty unsporting, unpleasant and ungracious of Wayne Rooney. And with all his experience of international finals, too."

True enough - perhaps Rooney could afford to be a little more flippant once he takes his country to an international tournament final first - or is nice enough to be eligible to play in all three group stage games in the next one after Euro 2012 at least.

isn't it funny how the loon picks out of the whol ivory coast squad the toure brothers, he is just showing what players and team are bothering him the most in the premier league, yes manchester city , top of the league and he is gutted because it looks like its us thats gonna win, how childish is this moron to pick out yaya and kolo from many other players in the prem. grow up looney, you aint won nothing this season yet so you got nothing to be big about. i'm sure the toure brothers are gonna laugh at your comments, they are bigger than that. you really are a donkey.

Is it true that it's official Man U policy not to employ African stars because they're often called up for the African Cup of Nations? If it is, that probably explains Wayne's whine! Congratulations to Zambia! Hard luck to cote d'ivoire.

I hope someone pointed out to him the number of International finals he has been involved in, and that for the Euros he is banned from playing in the group stages. I'd call Rooney a nuisance, but it takes intelligence to be a nuisance. Rooney is just a pest.

As a patriotic Englishman I wish to say Wayne Rooney is a disgrace to England, English football and the English people, There is enough video footage on the internet to show he is as much a cheat as Diego Maradona is to England. However Wayne Rooney will never ever be the player Diego was, he will never win the World Cup because he will be pushed aside by Daniel Sturridge eventually and if not Sturridge definitely 100% by Harry Bunn.

As an Englishman I am ashamed to call him my fellow countryman, Yaya Toure is ten times a football player than Rooney and when we win the Title we will all take much delight in Wayne Rooney's distress.

Evertonian mercenary who turned his back on Everton for the love of Money and a United shirt already drowned in glory, he will never be making much significant history because their history were already present.

Always banging on about their history though they played no part in it what so ever.

It's about time that players started speaking their minds. Rooney is a Utd player. It's the perfect scenario for united, two of City's best players leave for the African Cup of Nations - they spend all month there playing in a ton of games and then ultimately lose in the final. Tell it like it is. I've had enough with all this rubbish where players can't talk bad about their rivals and managers can't question decisions. Paul Scholes - there's your role model from united, not every player is going to be that sensible on and off the pitch. Let Rooney say what he wants on twitter.

one more thing: your entire post is a bunch of s.
Played no part in the history? He's 97 goals short of being united's top goal scorer of all time, won the champions league and a bunch of domestic titles. What are you talking about, Jason?

It was a privilege to watch one of our very own battle in the biggest platform Africa has to offer! Watching him break down into tears! Well, United had no representative so it is safe for Rooney to mock! Yaya Toure is a better player and more responsible player than Rooney. Well, he has another title to battle for in the EPL. MANCINI'S MAN CITY A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN!

The irony is not lost on me,that,in a week when man u remembered the Munich dead, albeit, without a minute's silence against Liverpool,we have this classless thug mocking two City players, who's fans were impeccable almost 4 years to the day of the 50th anniversary!! Zambia's dignity should be a lesson to the,"Money grabbing whore!"
