We don’t like the look of Liverpool’s first summer signing

Brendan Rodgers has yet to make a signing at Liverpool but surely ‘Mighty Red’ isn’t going to be the only new face at Anfield this summer?

Mascots are not well liked in this part of the world. In the States every team in every sport, no matter how far from the spotlight they reside, has a furry creation, some of them so terrifying you imagine they are used to scare away punters, not attract them.

While the GAA has thankfully resisted the temptation to embrace the trend, it is quite well established in soccer, with Hooperman (of Shamrock Rovers) probably our most famous pitchside creation.

In the Premier League most clubs have a pitchside presence in a stupid outfit, with Arsenal’s Gunnersaurus Rex and Manchester United’s Fred the Red the best known.

Liverpool have always resisted the mascot temptation, until now, as they unveiled one yesterday. Here’s ‘Mighty Red’ a full sized Liver Bird type creature that is more than a little freaky looking.

According to reports, Mighty won’t be called up on match days, and will only be used at community  events. Some fans are not happy at what they perceive as an Americanisation of the club by their, well, American owners.

We think that Mighty Red looks a bit freaky but if it came down to an old fashioned mascot fight, he could take Fred and Gunnersaurus and surely that’s the most important thing.

The thing we are most surprised about is that Mighty Red has yet to spawn a spoof Twitter account. It won’t be long we suspect.
