UPDATED: Wes Hoolahan called into Irish squad

10/08/2012 6:33 pm

There’s been good news for some unhappy Ireland soccer fans ahead of the weekend as Giovanni Trapattoni has drafted creative midfielder Wes Hoolahan into his squad this evening.

Wes Hoolahan has been drafted into the Irish squad ahead of their friendly match against Serbia in Belgrade this Wednesday. The former Shelbourne and Blackpool midfielder has been called into squad as unfortunately Darron Gibson suffered a muscle tear during Everton’s pre-season training and had to withdraw.

Hoolahan had gained widespread praise last season for his performances for Norwich as their creative fulcrum in midfield, with Match of the Day analaysts frequently championing the former League of Ireland man.

Some jaded soccer fans have bemoaned Trap’s rigid philosophy and formation with Ireland that has seen him overlook players like Hoolahan in the past.

However the Ireland boss has said that he will use friendlies against Oman and Serbia to integrate newer players into his squad that had the oldest average age at the European Championships. This comes as good news to players like James McCarthy and Wes Hoolahan.

So aside from the good weather this weekend, Irish fans discontent with the football style of one of Europe’s greatest managers can also look forward to seeing some new players  come in to freshen up the Irish team in the next few weeks.

Maybe an old Italian manager can learn new tricks...

UPDATE: Less than three hours after the FAI had announced that Wes Hoolahan had been called up to the Irish squad, they have announced that the Norwich midfielder was disappointed that he had to decline the call up due to his Achilles tendon flaring up and he needing a rest. No replacement for Hoolahan or Gibson has been named.
