JOE’s Top 3 reasons to watch tonight’s Champions League football

Bayern Munich and Man City renew acquaintances, Chelsea launch their campaign and Zlatan returns to Ajax…

Bayern Munich v Man City

These two teams are probably sick of the sight of each other as they prepare to meet for the fifth time in the last three years.

The games in Munich have always been very eventful; there was Carlos Tevez’s substitute strop when being asked to warm-up by Roberto Mancini a few years back, and Manuel Pellegrini’s goal-difference miscalculation that overshadowed last season’s impressive 3-2 win.

City will fancy their chances of causing another upset tonight, especially since the German champions are missing Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago, Rafinha, Javi Martinez, Holger Badstuber, Franck Ribery and potentially Arjen Robben as well.

It’s testament to their frightening strength that they can still rely upon the deadly Thomas Müller, World Cup hero Mario Götze and their new signing Robert Lewandowski to trouble the City back four. JOE mancrush Xabi Alonso might also feature; his presence alone is a great reason to watch this one.

The air of Champions League invincibility surrounding Pep Guardiola was well and truly shattered by Real Madrid’s emphatic semi-final win against his side last season, and we think the five-time winners will be keen to make an early statement of intent tonight.

This game could go either way but you can definitely expect some goals and drama.

Chelsea v Schalke

We think there is very little that bothers Jose Mourinho apart from his obsession to win the Champions League at Chelsea. The Special One has lifted Europe’s biggest club trophy twice before, with Porto and Inter Milan, but he has come up short in three semi-finals during his spells at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho is aiming to become the first manager to win the competition with three different clubs and the first steps to the final in Berlin begin this evening.

This Chelsea team is every inch a ‘Mourinho’ team with the undoubted talents of Hazard, Schurrle and Oscar being supplemented with some shrewd summer signings. Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa have already struck up a devastating partnership and Chelsea look like they are extremely capable of winning the Champions League.

Didier Drogba is expected to feature against the Germans and Petr Cech (remember him?) should also get a start for the Blues. Chelsea beat the Germans 3-0, home and away, last season and it should be a similar case tonight.

Ajax v PSG

Zlatan Ibrahimovic? He is a good enough reason to watch any game of football.

The genius Swedish striker is one of the most box-office footballers on the planet and tonight he returns to the ground where he first made the world stand up and take notice of his amazing talent.

This is what he did in the famous Ajax strip slightly over 10 years ago.

We’re pretty certain that Zlatan is so cool that this meeting with Ajax just another game to him, but we reckon that nothing will give him more pleasure than returning to the Amsterdam ArenA and scoring another cracker.

He has hit a fair few amazing goals for PSG in the Champions League as well. Just like this one…
