JOE's Transfer wrap-up: Davies, Zaha, Tevez (again) and Carroll (again)

30/01/2012 5:00 pm

It’s almost a clean sweep of strikers in Monday’s transfer wrap-up as the clock ticks down towards Tuesday’s midnight deadline. (Unless you’re close enough to a signing, in which case the deadline might be extended until about Thursday morning.)

First up, our eye was caught by the throwaway line that Sunderland have failed in a bid for Bolton Wanderers captain, possible Guardian Secret Footballer columnist and the man who really puts “one-time” into the phrase “one-time England international”, Kevin Davies.

Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill wants to bring Davies’s brand of Premier League centre half rough-em-up to the Stadium of Light.

As yet, it’s just a rumour and Bolton appear reluctant to sell, although a combination of the soon-to-be-35-year-old's age, wages and goal tally - a Heskey-esque three in 37 league appearances over the past year - could yet force manager Owen Coyle’s hand.

If Davies is on the move, then Coyle seems already to have identified his replacement with the confirmation of an offer for Wilfried Zaha, the teenage Crystal Palace striker.

“I think it is documented now that we have made an offer, which we have,” said Coyle, doing a slack enough job of beating round the bush.

"I always put what I think is a fair value on a player and if we get to it, great. If we don't, then we're not going to pay over the odds,” Coyle added, before putting his two feet in it by giving Palace every reason to turn down the offer: “He is such a talented young player and he will get better - there is scope for improvement. He has got pace and unbelievable quality and natural attributes.”

Making a quick stop-off at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will be hoping Kevin De Bruyne makes much more than a quick stop-off at Stamford Bridge after making the 20-year-old Belgian sign away five and a half years of his life on a big-money deal.

The young midfielder will cost Roman Abramovich £6.7m – or a handful of cabins on a luxury yacht – and, generous as the Russian oligarch is, he’ll be loaned back to Genk for the rest of the season.

Moving to Liverpool and the latest developments in the won’t-he-won’t-he saga of the January transfer window: Andy Carroll.

And – surprise, surprise! – it turns out that £35m snip Carroll won’t be leaving Anfield for a bag of coins and two boxes of crisps before the deadline.

That could be bad news for Manchester City exile and serial new club photo-poser Carlos Tevez, who has been linked with a jaunt to Anfield in recent days. The odds on him joining Liverpool have tumbled from 33/1 to 8/1 over the past day or two, but that probably tells you more about the marketing people at Sky Bet than it does about the prospect of a move actually happening.

"There’s no-one going in or out of the club before the transfer window [closes], there is nothing happening here,” said Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish. Although since Kenny doesn’t even seem to know a whole lot about his wife – Exhibit A: “All Star Mr and Mrs”, UTV, Saturday night – there must be a chance he isn’t too clued in to the power-broking in the Anfield boardroom.

To be honest, we think a move for Tevez would be nuts. We say that partly because Tevez will probably want to go somewhere else within a fortnight, and partly because it allows us to get a reference to Kit Kat Chunky Peanut Butter into today’s Transfer Window Wrap. (Which is your favourite? Vote here!)

Staying on Merseyside – we’ll get off the Andy Carroll theme soon, honest – there have been no concrete developments in the situation surrounding Ireland star Kevin Doyle, with Wolves still “waiting” for a formal offer from Everton.

What they do if they have to stop waiting and start deciding is another question entirely, however. In the manner of all forward-thinking people, they’ll cross that bridge when they come to it.
